A sticky dry bag usually comes from the material. PVC contains plasticizers that can work their way to the surface, and heat, age, and sun speed that up. Wipe it gently with mild soap and water, dry it open, and store it cool. Skip solvents and rubbing alcohol, which can make it worse.
You pull the bag off the shelf and it feels tacky, like it picked up something. It did not. That feeling has a cause and it is worth understanding, because the fix most people reach for makes it worse.
Why does a dry bag get sticky?
The main body of our bags is a PVC laminate, 80% PVC and 20% polyester. PVC is naturally rigid, so manufacturers add plasticizers to make it flexible. Over time, and faster with heat, sun, and age, some of those plasticizers can work their way to the surface and leave it feeling tacky. It is a known behavior of the material, not something you did and not a sign the bag is about to fail. (We are describing how PVC generally behaves, not claiming to have measured it in these specific bags.)
Heat is the usual accelerator. A bag left in a hot car is the classic case, which we cover in the temperature post.
What should you clean a sticky dry bag with?
Less than you think. Wipe the surface with a soft cloth, mild soap, and water. Rinse, then dry the bag fully open. If a light tackiness remains, repeat once. Store it afterward cool, loose, and out of direct sun, as in our care post.
What should you never put on a sticky dry bag?
Solvents. Rubbing alcohol, acetone, nail polish remover, and most household degreasers can strip plasticizers further, which can leave the surface brittle, discolored, or tackier. Some repair guides tell you to prep a patch area with alcohol, and that is a different job on a small spot. For a whole tacky panel, it is not the move. A dryer is out for the same reason: heat is the problem.
If the tackiness is heavy or the bag looks wrong, write to us at hello@wildcurrentsco.com with a photo before you try anything stronger.
A bag worth keeping gentle with
Good storage is most of the answer. If you are choosing between sizes, the 20L collection is the one that benefits most from loose storage, since it is the biggest to fold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my dry bag sticky?
The main body is PVC laminate, and plasticizers in PVC can migrate to the surface over time, faster with heat, sun, and age. It is a known behavior of the material.
How do I fix a sticky dry bag?
Wipe it with a soft cloth, mild soap, and water. Rinse, then dry it fully open. Repeat once if needed and store it cool and loose, out of direct sun.
Can I use rubbing alcohol on a sticky dry bag?
No. Rubbing alcohol and other solvents can strip more plasticizer from PVC and leave the surface brittle, discolored, or tackier. Stick to mild soap and water.
Is a sticky dry bag still safe to use?
A light tackiness is a surface issue and not a sign of failure. If it is heavy or the bag looks cracked or damaged, email hello@wildcurrentsco.com with a photo.
Can I put a sticky dry bag in the dryer?
No. Heat speeds up the problem, and machine washing and drying are not part of the care routine for these bags.
